Romans Chapter 2 continues Paul’s epistle to the church at Rome by showing that God’s judgment is according to truth and that no man can stand righteous before God by outward appearance, religious knowledge, or self-righteous judgment of others. Paul reveals that both Jew and Gentile are accountable before God, and that the goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering of God are meant to lead man to repentance.
In this chapter, Paul also shows that hearing the Law is not the same as being righteous before God. True righteousness is not found in outward religion, but in the inward work of God upon the heart. Romans Chapter 2 points clearly to man’s need for a changed heart and brings the heart back to Jesus Christ and The Finished Work of the Cross.
