Sarah, originally named Sarai, was a pivotal figure in God’s redemptive plan. She was the wife and half-sister of Abraham and accompanied him from Ur to Canaan. Sarah’s journey with God, her struggles, and her ultimate role as the mother of the promised son, Isaac, showcase God’s faithfulness and His call for unwavering trust in His promises.
A Call to Faith
God first called Abraham to leave his country, kindred, and father’s house to journey to a land that He would reveal (Genesis 12:1–3). This call required immense faith, not only from Abraham but also from Sarah. As Abraham obeyed, Sarah left behind her familiar life and ventured into the unknown, demonstrating her faith in God’s promises. Hebrews 11:8–11 reminds us that Sarah “judged Him faithful who had promised.”
Sarah’s identity as a “princess” (the meaning of her name) was not only a title but a reflection of her divine calling. She was a fair woman to look upon, a mother of nations, and an example of faith and perseverance.
Struggles with Doubt
Despite her faith, Sarah faced immense challenges, especially her barrenness. For years, she waited for the fulfillment of God’s promise to make Abraham a great nation. This long wait tested her faith and led her to suggest that Abraham conceive a child through her maid, Hagar (Genesis 16:1–2). This decision brought conflict and sorrow, yet God’s promise remained steadfast.
In Genesis 18:10–14, the Lord renewed His promise, telling Abraham that Sarah would bear a son. Sarah laughed in disbelief, questioning, “Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old?” Yet God’s response was clear: “Is anything too hard for the Lord?” This question challenges us even today to trust God when circumstances seem impossible (Luke 1:37).
The Fulfillment of God’s Promise
At the age of ninety, Sarah conceived and gave birth to Isaac, as God had promised (Genesis 21:1–3). Abraham was one hundred years old when Isaac was born, fulfilling the covenant that through their offspring, all the families of the earth would be blessed (Genesis 17:19; Genesis 21:5).
This miraculous birth stands as a testament to God’s power and faithfulness. Romans 4:19–21 highlights Abraham and Sarah’s unwavering belief, stating that Abraham "staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief." Isaac’s birth points to the ultimate fulfillment of God’s promise in Christ, through whom all nations are blessed (Galatians 3:16).
Sarah’s faith was tested once more when God commanded Abraham to sacrifice Isaac (Genesis 22:1–2). Though God provided a ram in place of Isaac, this event foreshadowed the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, for the redemption of the world.
Lessons from Sarah’s Life
Faith Requires Perseverance: Sarah’s journey reminds us that waiting on God’s timing is not easy, but His promises never fail (2 Peter 3:9).
God’s Strength in Our Weakness: Sarah’s age and barrenness underscore that God’s power is made perfect in our limitations (2 Corinthians 12:9).
The Importance of Trust: Even when Sarah doubted, God remained faithful. This reminds us that our faith must rest in His character, not our circumstances.
A Model for Women of Faith: Sarah is the perfect example of Paul’s teaching regarding a wife’s qualities. She proved to be loyal, supportive, and submissive to Abraham (1 Peter 3:6) as he obeyed God’s call.
A Call to Walk by Faith
Sarah’s life teaches us to keep our faith and trust in the Lord, not by what we see, but by faith alone. As believers, we are called to walk by the way of the cross, holding fast to the finished work of Christ (Hebrews 12:2).
Do you know Jesus as your Lord and Savior? The promises of God are available to all who place their faith in Him. Like Sarah, we are called to trust God’s Word and live by faith, even when life’s challenges seem insurmountable.
